The Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra, “Last night At the Proms”(Saturday 2nd of July)

The Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra have a treat in store for our Saturday Classical Night.  They will be performing under a new young Spanish conductor for this event, Juan Ortuno , who is a Masters Graduate at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and is currently Musical Director of the City of Manchester Opera. He has conducted various orchestras in the UK such as the Manchester Camerata and Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Juan holds a degree in Phsyics, another of his passions in life.

The first half programme will include:

PROKOFIEV Montagues and Capulets                                BARTOK Romanian Dances

HAYDN Symphony 104, Movement 4                      FOGO Astor & Tango

and         MARQUEZ Danzon No. 2

The second half of the programme leads into a real “Last Night of the Proms” finale – but before that, some interesting orchestral and vocal pieces are also included. Following his success here last year, we shall hear the Sardinian Baritone/Tenor, Antonello Arca, who first sang with the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra during their Italian tour in 2009. He specialises in promoting the music of Northern Sardinia which he sings in their unique language, Algherese. This year he has had a busy schedule, giving concerts and singing operatic roles in Germany and Austria as well as his native Italy.

IVES Variations on America

2 Arias from Mozart’s Don Giovanni: “Finch’han dal vino” and “La ci darem la mano” – where Antonello will be joined by mezzo soprano Charly Oakley. Charly was born in Sheffield and sang with the Cantores choir. She is now studying to be a vet in Bristol where she sings with the Chamber Choir and the University Singers. Antonello’s final piece is “O Surdato Namorato” (a popular Neapolitan song).

These latter pieces will be a great opportunity for everyone to join in our “Last Night”

Presenting a wide range of classical pieces both old and new, with the second half being along the lines of a “Last Night Of The Proms” so should you wish to do so, please feel free to dress accordingly.

Tickets cost £8 in advance (other sellers may apply a booking fee) and £10 on the night at the gate (cash only)
